Hogwarts, A History
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is one of the best instructions of magical training in the world. Founded over a thousand years ago by four of the greatest witches and wizards of the time; Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw, Godric Gryffindor, and Helga Hufflepuff. This extensive guide will tell you all you'll ever need to know about Hogwarts!
As previously mentioned, there were four founders of Hogwarts, each after which a Hogwarts house is named. The four houses of course being Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Gryffindor, each with it's own unique qualities. When students come to Hogwarts it's based upon their traits that they are sorted into a house. The basic traits of Slytherin are cunning, power-hungry, shrewd, and ambitious. Those of Ravenclaw are intelligence, wit, cleverness, and wisdom. Gryffindor's are courage, bravery, boldness, and daring. The traits of Hufflepuff are kindness, hard-working, loyal, and just.
First year students arrive on The Hogwarts Express along with the rest of the students. The first years, however, take a boat ride across the Lake and are then led into a corridor to wait for the Sorting. They then proceed into the Great Hall and come up in alphabetical order to be sorted. When one's name is called to be Sorted they sit on a stool in front of the rest of the school and put on the Sorting Hat. The battered and frayed wizard hat can read your thoughts and decide what house you belong in. It will announced your chosen house to the school.
After the Sorting Ceremony there's a feast to start off the year, always ending with the Headmaster's announcements for the new year and then the school song. Everyone picks their favorite tune and sings to it;
Hogwarts School Song.... My favorite...
Hogwarts, Hogwarts, Hoggy Warty Hogwarts,
Teach us something please,
Whether we be old and bald
Or young with scabby knees,
Our heads could do with filling
With some interesting stuff,
For now they're filled with air,
Dead flies and bits of fluff,
So teach us things worth knowing,
Bring back what we've forgot,
Just do your best, we'll do the rest,
And learn until our brains all rot.
"..music, a magic beyond all we do here!" as current Headmaster Albus Dumbledore once stated. Hogwarts castle has many protection enchantments on it, including one that makes it unplottable. There are many towers, and an inside that could confuse anyone walking about the first time. The grounds include a Quidditch stadium where the house teams play on, the Forbidden Forest and the Lake. The Great Hall has a ceiling enchanted to mirror the actual sky outside.
The founders had built the castle far away from prying Muggle eyes and worked peacefully for many years teaching young people with magical potential. How an argument began to grow, mainly between Salazar Slytherin and Godric Gryffindor. Slytherin wanted to be more selective in the acceptance to Hogwarts and not accept Muggle-born students while the other founders maintained that anyone with the right potential should be allowed to enroll. Soon after Slytherin left the school but it is rumored that he built a secret chamber first.
The Chamber of Secrets according to the legend was sealed so no one could open it until Slytherin's true heir arrived at the school. The heir alone would be able to open the chamber and unleash the horrors of within the chamber. The chamber has, in fact, been opened twice. The first time by Slytherin's heir Tom Marvel Riddle, better known today as Voldemort. He let loose the basilisk in the chamber and it eventually killed a girl. Fifty years later, the memory of Riddle encased into a diary, opened the chamber again but fortunately no one was killed and the basilisk was destroyed.
Over one thousand years old, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry holds many more secrets and oddities. Many events both joyous and sorrowful have taken place within it's grounds and walls. Always remember to keep on your toes at Hogwarts and remember the motto, Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus - Never Tickle a Sleeping Dragon.
